What is the significance of using Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) across relay and contactor coils.

AC and mostly DC coils relay, contactor, actuator could be very disturbing sources if no overvoltage protection is fitted in parallel with the coil.

For DC and AC applications, the relay/contactor coils have to be protected to avoid any huge disturbances. In this case, the energy stored inside the coil will be dissipated in the Transient Voltage Suppressor, as shown in the picture above on the right side.
